Çavuşin Village: Rock-Cut History & Comfortable Guesthouses

Hotels & Accommodation|2025-03-08|5 min read|James Williams

Çavuşin is one of Cappadocia's most fascinating villages — an old ghost town carved into a cliff face, with a new village below and friendly guesthouses.

Two Villages in One

Çavuşin has an old abandoned cliff village — evacuated in the 1960s due to rock fall — and a functioning new village below. The old village cliff houses are freely explorable and create extraordinary photo opportunities.

The Church of St. John the Baptist

Çavuşin's 5th-century rock-cut church is one of the oldest in Cappadocia, with partially preserved frescoes depicting important religious scenes. Entry is free outside opening hours.

Staying in Çavuşin

A handful of family guesthouses offer simple cave rooms with home cooking for $40–60 including breakfast. The village is perfectly placed between Göreme and Avanos — ideal for valley hiking.
