Turkish Coffee: How to Order, Drink & Read Your Fortune

Turkish coffee is one of the world's oldest coffee brewing methods and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Here is how to enjoy it properly in Cappadocia.

How Turkish Coffee is Made

Very finely ground coffee is simmered (never boiled) in a small copper or brass pot called a cezve with cold water and sugar. The coffee and grounds are poured together into a small cup. Let the grounds settle for 2–3 minutes before drinking — and never drink all the way to the bottom.

How to Order

Sade (no sugar), az şekerli (a little sugar), orta şekerli (medium sweet), çok şekerli (very sweet). Always served with a glass of water and a small sweet (usually Turkish delight).

Coffee Fortune-Telling (Tasseography)

After finishing, turn the cup upside down onto the saucer and wait 5 minutes. A local "reader" will then interpret the shapes left by the dried grounds to tell your fortune — a fun cultural experience offered at many Cappadocia cafes.
