Uçhisar Castle: Climbing Cappadocia's Highest Point

What is Uçhisar Castle?

Uçhisar Castle is not a built castle — it is a massive natural rock formation riddled with ancient carved rooms, tunnels, and windows used as dwellings and fortifications for millennia. The rock rises 60 metres above the surrounding terrain.

The Climb

A series of steep carved stone staircases lead to the summit. The climb takes about 15–20 minutes and involves some narrow passages. The view from the top — a 360-degree panorama encompassing all of Cappadocia's major valleys — is the best in the region.

Entry: $5. Open daily 08:00–20:00 (summer), 08:00–17:00 (winter). Go at sunset for extraordinary golden light. The surrounding village has excellent boutique hotels and restaurants right at the base.
