How Deep is Derinkuyu?
Derinkuyu extends 85 metres below the surface across 18 levels, though only 8 levels are currently open to visitors. The city includes ventilation shafts, wine cellars, stables, churches, schools, and water wells — everything needed to sustain a community underground for months.
Who Built It?
The exact builders remain debated. Hittites may have started initial excavations (1200 BC), but most of what visitors see today dates to the Byzantine period (8th–9th centuries AD), when Christian communities hid from Arab raiders by retreating underground.
