建設者については諸説あります。ヒッタイト人が紀元前1200年頃に掘り始め、8〜9世紀のビザンチン時代にアラブ軍の侵攻を逃れるため大規模に拡張したと考えられています。

ゴレメから南29km。入場料:約1,300円。開館:8:00〜17:00。薄手のジャケット必携(地下は通年10〜12℃)。狭いトンネルあり。混雑前の午前8〜9時台が快適。
