Standing at the edge of the Ihlara Valley gorge, Selime is a stunning sight — a full-scale cliff face carved into a complex of cathedral-like halls, bishop's palaces, churches, and kitchens spanning multiple levels. From a distance it appears to be part of the natural rock; only on approach does the scale of human engineering become apparent.
History
The monastery dates primarily to the 8th–9th centuries and served as an important monastic community throughout the Byzantine period. The main cathedral has barrel-vaulted ceilings 8 metres high with carved pilasters. The bishop's residence adjacent contains a large cooking area with carved stone chimneys.
